The Moberly Police Department started its K-9 Program in 1979 with the purchase of Gabriel IV. Officer Dennis Taylor was the handler for “Gabe” until his retirement in 1986. In 1998 Officer Tarr was assigned to K-9 Rolf who was purchased through a grant. Officer Tarr and Rolf attended 16 weeks of basic police K-9 school at the St. Louis Police K-9 Training Academy.
In October of 2001, the Moberly Police Department purchased K-9 Cako (pronounced Seiko), also through a grant, and he was assigned to Corporal Shane Newbrough. Newbrough and Cako attended 10 weeks of basic police K-9 school at the Riverview Training Academy located in Cape Girardeau Missouri.

The K-9 Unit works special layover shifts. This is normally done during the peak hours of the day when the calls for service are at their highest. As the K-9 Unit also provides mutual aide services for law enforcement agencies around the Moberly area, they are always near their pager.
